Starting on the line

by Alex Michelini
Speaking of independents, George McDonald, an advocate of the homeless who has been fighting for months to win a spot on the ballot in the race for Council president, believes in miracles.

He began campaigning with an "It's a Miracle" button in his lapel. It didn't work. He failed to get enough petition signatures for the Democratic ballot.

But he didn't give up hope. Out of the blue, McDonald got a call from Danny Spector, who had gathered enough signatures for an independent line but decided to drop out.

So he turned over the names to McDonald, who now will appear on the ballot under the slogan "People before Profits."

Other independents for the office are Lorraine Stevens, New Alliance Party, and Rashaad Ali, Socialist Workers.
